Last night I officially became a member of the Libertarian Society’s management team and later today will our first meeting be held.

Last night I also went to the Scooter concert in Laugardalsholl. Although I am far from being a fan, the concert was great. I have never experienced such a huge sound system and light show in the concert hall. Mixed with the kind of music the band plays makes it impossible not like the concert. My friend Asgeir deserves respect for all his extra effort to make the concert such a great experience.

I have been working on the school project about Hagar this weekend but I met my group at 9am this morning. We were almost done when we parted at around 12 but after bouncing the assignment between us a bit, it is now mostly done.

There were -mMany interesting facts that sprang out of doing the project but especially from a report by the Economics Institute of the University of Iceland:

* Grocery prices are on average 50% higher in Iceland than Europe
* The government’s agricultural support was 1,7% of GDP 2000-2002 compared to 1,5% in Norway and 1,3% in the EU.

* It is estimated that the agricultural support costs Icelanders 12-13 billion ISK each year, half which is increased taxes and the other half through higher prices!

There are more fascinating facts in this report about how distorted everything concerning agriculture is in Iceland which is costing taxpayers huge amounts and keeping the farmers poor. The agricultural sector in Iceland is badly in the need of the invisible hand of the marketplace instead of the government’s invisible foot which has been holding the sector down!

I’ve been asked a few times why I hope Bush wins the coming US election. The simplest answer is this: Republicans want lower taxes and stronger defenses but the Democrats higher taxes and lower defenses. It is as simple as that! By the looks of it, my guy is going to win!
